BlueTooth Kit G4 (en)

Please note that following information is given for your own knowledge.
This manipulation is a sensitive operation. You make it on your own risks.
Neither Powerbook-fr nor iBook-fr can’t be responsible for what you do, and for any damage.

Note :
A more *rush job* (but useful for G3 iBook) is available here.

We’d like to thank TCS Mac for providing us the original Apple Bluetooth unit (you can order it by Bricomac.fr by now) and Services M.A.C. for the manipulation. You can contact them for upgrading your own iBook.

(JPG) First of all, here is what we need for the job :

-  one BlueTooth kit : the unit (the electronic board), the connecting cable (it looks like an ’L’), the antenna and 4 screws (who knows... they may be useful).

-  a G4 iBook 14" 1,33 GHz. It was not not supplied with internal Bluetooth unit as you can see :

(JPG)

Look at the time (4:16 pm), this is when we begun ;-)

Serious things begin now. The manipulation is really sensitive, don’t try it if you’re not self-confident enough.

OK, let’s unplug the battery and the sector, then lift the keyboard, remove the Airport card (if you have one), and open the RAM hatch (4 screws marked below). Now you can pull off the keyboard and remove it.

(JPG)

Put the closed iBook on the screen, remove the 3 screws as shown below : use a T8 Torx screwdriver, it’ll work fine. Remember the place of each screw, it’ll be really useful when you’ll reassemble the machine.

(JPG)

Remove now the 3 plastic feet (you just have to lever them off), loosen the screw, it remains inside the metal piece. When you’ll reassemble, be careful to mount the metal piece the good way (it has to be in the good direction, don’t force the way).

(JPG)

The simpliest step : 2 screws beside the battery connector.

(JPG)

Now you can dislodge the iBook’s bottom part. Begin with the battery corner, press the white plastic part near the 2 arrows below, the corner should dislodge easily.

(JPG)

Then, use a plastic tool to go further. We use a lead but any thin plastic piece should work (it does not mark the plastic parts, it’s obviously better than metal tools). You need to move the grey area away from the white one to loosen the clips.

(JPG)

The part is almost removed, but it’s still attached in the optical drive area.

(JPG)

Clips are reversed in this area : you now need to remove the white part away from the grey one to loosen the clips totally.

(JPG)

Once the lower part removed, this is what you’ll see. You’ve got to loosen every screws marked below. They all are different.

(JPG)

To make things easier, we draw our inspiration from Dédé’s model. It’s about drawing a schematic on a single paper sheet : it’s now far more easier to remember the place of each screw.

(JPG)

Now you can remove the metal plate... and take another sheet : you’ve got to loosen every screws as shown below. It’s a pleasure, isn’t it ?! Loosen those screws allows you to take the upper case apart (on the computer’s keyboard side).

(JPG)

Turn the iBook on the bottom side, open the screen and loosen 3 more screws.

(JPG)

This time you can loosen the clips easier. After disconnecting trackpad, audio and mic cables, you’ll find another metal plate. Loosen every screws as indicated below.... once more.

(JPG)

Use a third paper sheet, it’s essential when reassembling the parts together. Here is ours :

(JPG)

15 more screws :-) Once the metal plate removed, here is the place where you’ll mount the Bluetooth unit...

(JPG)

The small rectangle (red circle) is the Bluetooth unit’s place. You simply need to screw the electonic board on. The ’L’ cable has to be plugged on the logic board (near the BT unit’s upper left corner), the antenna (which should be positioned while reassembling) goes on the BT unit’s right side alongside the DVD drive, then goes in a housing in the metal plate, just over the DVD drive’s opening.

(JPG)

Now you can reassemble the iBook. Step by step in reverse order, don’t screw too much onon, plastic is far more fragile than aluminium. You’ll understand why we do use paper sheets as ’stickies’ ;-)

Plastic parts should fit together, don’t use your force instead of your mind.

We plug the battery back on, we plug the sector too and now : (JPG)

Success ! Bluetooth is now ’on’ as you can see. Note, the time indicates 6:01pm, slightly 2 hours from the beginning. So even for advised people, it’s a lengthy operation !
